As a new mom juggling daily outdoor adventures and doctor appointments, I just wanted everything packed, labelled and ready to go.

The name North Cub came after I saw an image of a momma polar bear holding the North Star. It clicked. That's what I wanted to share: a mother carries the light for her cub.

My mother carried our family after my father passed away. As parents do, she found the strength for her children. For a long time I didn't like the word “strength.” I'd rebut it whenever someone said it to me as a compliment, because where was the choice? No choice. You do your best, and you keep moving forward.

We move north, cub.

This is for our son, who made me a mother even though we didn’t get to bring him home, and our brave baby girl.

And it's for all the women who have poured into me: my mother, grandmothers, aunts, cousins, neighbours, friends, colleagues and leaders.
